The Gulf Coast Community Design Studio is located in Biloxi, Mississippi and is a research and professional service program of Mississippi State University College of Architecture, Art, and Design. Since its establishment following Hurricane Katrina, the design studio has worked with many local and national partners to provide planning, landscape architecture and architecture services to communities and non-profit organizations along the Gulf Coast. The design studio's work has evolved from rebuilding to long-term resiliency and is recognized as a national leader in Public Interest practice.
The Gulf Coast Community Design Studio is seeking qualified applicants for a Community Planner to work in Biloxi, Mississippi on planning and urban design projects. The work ranges from regional planning to neighborhood-scale urban design. All the projects work with community partners and include a variety of outreach and education efforts. The essential duties and responsibilities include planning and designing projects at a range of scales, using GIS mapping and planning tools, organizing and participating in community meetings, and supervising the work of interns. The qualifications are a professional degree in urban planning, urban design or architecture and five years of planning or architecture experience. The position is responsible for the maintenance of the Zoning Ordinance, application and exercising independent judgment regarding the interpretation of zoning laws, issuing Certificates of Occupancy, reviewing building permit applications and enforcement of zoning laws. Ability to read plats, maps and site plans, perform mathematical calculations to determine required green space, parking spaces, etc., research and analyze zoning issues, prepare reports and correspondence and make zoning presentations at public meetings. Bachelor's degree in Planning or related field and/or some experience in urban planning or related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
